Legoland will reopen one of Cypress Gardens’ most historic attractions

    0

While Disney World’s 50th-anniversary celebrations make few references to the previous fifty years, LEGOLAND Florida’s tenth-anniversary celebrations feature numerous tributes to the past, including vintage attractions that predate the park’s current location.

Boat rides, which were available on the gardens’ canals from the late 1930s until the park’s closure in the aughts, are set to return, according to LEGOLAND.

    Cypress Gardens at LEGOLAND Florida

Cypress Gardens, which opened in 1936 on the current location of LEGOLAND, contributed to the development of Florida as a tourist destination. It housed various film productions and celebrities throughout the next four decades, as well as millions of visitors.

By the 1980s, visitation had declined, and the site was now considerably out of the way for many travelers due to Florida’s interstates. The park was a part of the SeaWorld family from 1985 to the mid-1990s, allowing it to be the younger brother of Busch Gardens and SeaWorld Orlando.

The park struggled to stay relevant after Busch Entertainment sold it in 1995. In 2003, the park was permanently closed. In an effort to preserve the gardens, the State, the Trust for Public Land, and Polk County agreed to jointly acquire them at this time. The park was revived in 2007 as a short-lived amusement park with a water park and thrill rides. The park was once again closed before the end of 2009, and its future was uncertain. The next year, Merlin announced a partnership with the state to open LEGOLAND Florida on the property. LEGOLAND was expected to maintain the historic gardens as part of the arrangement. The water ski show was also brought back by the park.

Merlin had to renovate huge portions of the park before constructing LEGOLAND Florida. Many of the previous attractions, such as a custom-built wooden roller coaster, an observation ride, and a suspended family coaster, were saved.

Merlin spent the following four years expanding its family resort’s amenities by introducing new lands, modernizing shows, and adding multiple on-site hotels. In 2014, they reopened the Oriental Gardens section of the gardens, allowing visitors to see the fully restored Florida Pool for the first time in many years. They also installed heaters near the Banyan Tree, which was established in the grounds in 1939, to ensure that it can withstand the freezing temperatures seen in the region during the coldest months of the year.

    LEGOLAND Cypress Gardens Botanical Gardens

Despite these enhancements, there was growing criticism that Merlin was focusing too much on new attractions and not enough on the historic gardens that helped establish Florida as a tourist destination. Polk County workers discovered the gardens were maintained “at a basic level” during an examination in 2018. Vegetation had gradually taken over the channels.

LEGOLAND reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the historic landmark last week. Guests may learn about both the history of LEGO and the history of Cypress Gardens in a new walk-through museum just inside the park’s gate. Guests can take a picture with an original ride vehicle from Cypress Gardens’ Triple Hurricane roller coaster. A pair of wooden skis nearby assist tell the story of the 85-year history of water skiing in the area.

Thanks to a bunch of pirates, the gardens are also enjoying a fresh lease on life. Merlin has confirmed that the historic boat cruise will return to the gardens starting next year, after years of speculation. In 1938, the Electric Boats at Cypress Plants debuted, providing visitors with a leisurely tour of the tropical gardens. The Electric Boats were the first actual ride at Cypress Gardens, which was Florida’s first theme park. The boats became synonymous with the gardens, and they were even included in the first feature-length wide-screen picture. The tranquil canal tour was later duplicated at various theme parks, such as Disneyland and Busch Gardens Tampa.

The man-made waterways that wind around the grounds were covered in duckweed and algae by the time Merlin took over the gardens in 2010. Things have improved since then, but the canals were formerly one of the historic gardens’ lesser-known features.

The boat ride will return next year, with a kid-focused narrative, according to Rex Jackson, managing director of LEGOLAND Parks in North America. According to Jackson, visitors will “travel through the famous Cypress Gardens in a full-size, Lego-themed boat as this new epic story unfolds brick by brick in this family-friendly treasure hunt.” The Pirate River Quest ride will take place on the gardens’ canals, with customers boarding the boats in the nearby Pirates Cove-themed park. Guests will board the ship and join a band of LEGO pirates who are attempting to recover a treasure stolen by a gang of mischievous monkeys.

    Pirate River Quest LEGOLAND Florida

Merlin has previously attempted to keep the gardens and LEGOLAND-themed attractions largely separate. They did add a few historically accurate LEGO sculptures to the gardens, but mostly they’ve retained it as a walk-through attraction. The sculptures of Southern Belles in the grounds have recently drawn fire as the country grapples with its racist past. The gardens have appeared to be an afterthought for Merlin, with the company’s primary focus being on increasing its ride roster and pursuing the latest hot LEGO franchise.

    Pirate River Quest LEGOLAND Florida

As a result, many visitors ignore the historic gardens, which are nestled away in a corner of the LEGOLAND park. The return of the boats will assist to introduce the gardens in a way that many people have not had the opportunity to do so before. It should also help restore some of the kinetic energy that made the gardens so wonderful in the first place.

The Pirate River Quest has yet to be announced, but the park has scheduled its annual PirateFest Weekends for certain dates in January.

Legoland Florida Resort is celebrating its 10th anniversary with exciting celebrations and brand-new attractions. One of the highlights of the park’s anniversary will be the launch of a new attraction, which will be joined by a birthday celebration day, the reopening of the Miniland USA area, and the return of pyrotechnics to Brick or Treat.

Brickbeard’s Watersports Stunt Show opened at the beginning of the year, and the park will be unveiling a new experience, The Legoland Story, on Oct. 15 this year. The attraction will bring the history of Lego to life with immersive and selfie-worthy exhibits, which will tell the narrative of the company’s beginnings.

Additionally, a new café, Legoland Coffee Co., will open next to the attraction, offering quick-to-go breakfast menu items, flash-chilled iced coffee, and popular seasonal flavors.

On October 15, guests will be able to celebrate with their favorite Lego characters as Legoland celebrates its tenth anniversary. The party will also feature the world’s largest Lego cake, which will measure more than 20 feet in height.

Granny’s Apple Fries will pay respect to the fan-favorite with an all-new Apple Fries Cupcake, which will be available only for the birthday celebrations at the restaurant. There will also be a Birthday Cake Latte available for purchase at the coffee shop in addition to this delectable delight. Both items will be available exclusively on October 15th.

The Brick-or-Treat is a Halloween event that allows kids to trick-or-treat in the safety of the well-supervised theme park. It has been designed to help parents enjoy Halloween with their kids without any worries.

Below are some tips for enjoying the LEGOLAND Brick-or-Treat event with children:

    1) Head over to our LEGOLAND Ticket Discount page to snag your Kids Go FREE with a purchased Adult ticket to save you some money, now you can spend it in the park on other items such as the famous Granny Smith Apple Fries.

    2) Bring a costume that your child can easily maneuver in and enjoy wearing.

    3) Plan to stay for the whole duration of the event, as there are many activities and features at LEGOLAND that will catch children’s attention and entice them to stay longer.

    4) Bring snacks, drinks, and a jacket or blanket, so you can be comfortable no matter what time of year it is when you visit.

    5) Plan to wear cooler clothing and/or costumes, as it can still get very warm during the day and into the evening in Florida, even during October. I suggest bringing a portable rechargeable fan to cool off your little one(s).

LEGOLAND New York is now open: Everything you need to know

    2

We don’t usually report on other LEGOLAND theme parks; however, since this is the first new LEGOLAND theme park in the United States since LEGOLAND Florida in 2011, we want you to know what it is like.

LEGOLAND New York Resort officially opens for previews starting Saturday, inviting guests to the epic 150-acre theme park located in Goshen, N.Y. — just 60 miles north of New York City.

The first major theme park to open in the Northeast in over 40 years, LEGOLAND New York will open Saturday with health and safety restrictions in place, such as mask-wearing, social distancing, daily cleaning, and ticket reservations.

Update 8/8/2021: Here’s a recent video from CBS This Morning Review of LEGOLAND New York.

Before you plan your trip, you’ll need to buy tickets and make reservations in advance online. Reservations for annual passes and single-day tickets are now available, with the company currently offering discounted prices on single-day tickets for the preview period, which lasts through June 20.

Typically, a single-day admission to the theme park will retail for $71.99 for adults online (13 years old and up), and $79.99 at the gate. For kids ages 3-12, tickets will retail for $62.99 online and $69.99 at the gate.

You can also visit our extremely popular LEGOLAND Florida Discount Tickets page which includes discounts and Kids Go Free Tickets for LEGOLAND New York! Be sure to bookmark this page as I will continue to update as new discounts become available. These discounts can be used for all three LEGOLAND theme parks in the US, including LEGOLAND California, LEGOLAND Florida, and LEGOLAND New York.

Note that, when you visit, certain areas or attractions might be closed. You should also be aware that there is no re-entry to the park. Due to capacity restrictions, all reservations and tickets are single-entry only.

Parking is $20 online, or $25 at the gate.

The annual pass is $229.99 for each individual 3 years old and older. It is valid for 12 months from your first visit to LEGOLAND New York and includes admission to all Merlin North America attractions for 12 months. Parking is included, and you can also get discounts on dining, shopping, and more.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting the LEGOLAND New York website.

The Goshen attraction is the largest LEGOLAND Park ever developed by Merlin Entertainment. It will be home to seven themed lands and more than 50 rides, shows, and attractions for families with children ages 2 through 12, as well as a 250-room LEGOLAND Hotel.

The park will open in phases throughout the summer, allowing annual pass holders and single-day ticket holders to enjoy six of the park’s seven themed lands: Brick Street, Bricktopia, Lego City, Lego Castle, Lego Ninjago World, and Miniland, during the initial preview phase. It will gradually increase capacity in order to encourage social distancing.

The final land, Lego Pirates, and the LEGOLAND Hotel are both expected to open later this summer, according to the park.

The LEGOLAND resort will be open seasonally — from late spring to early fall, and some educational areas will be open year-round.

“As the first theme park to open in the Northeast in decades, this preview period is our chance to welcome families who have been patiently waiting, giving them a chance to experience LEGOLAND New York in its final stages of completion,” said LEGOLAND New York Resort Divisional Director Stephanie Johnson. “After the challenges of the past year, we know families are eager to get out, ride, build, play, learn and spend time together. Through our phased opening approach, we’re able to safely welcome as many families as possible while prioritizing the health and safety of our guests and Model Citizens [staff members].”

    LEGOLAND HOTEL

When it opens later this summer, you can make it a fun weekend and stay at the new LEGOLAND Hotel. The 250-room hotel is specially designed for families, with imaginative Lego features and themed play areas everywhere you turn — and it’s located just steps away from the theme park.

Hotel guests will be able to enjoy free breakfast daily, kid-friendly entertainment, a heated resort-style pool, and an in-room scavenger hunt with Lego prizes every day. Each room will include a separate kid sleeping area, and guests can choose from one of four themes — pirate, kingdom, Lego Friends, or Lego Ninjago.

    RIDES AND ATTRACTIONS

LEGOLAND New York will also introduce the world’s first use of on-ride tracking technology to transform riders into Lego Minifigures. The Lego Factory Adventure Ride will identify the attributes of guests and map their position in the virtual space to transform riders into the popular Minifigures, like the Minifigure shown in this Lego car sculpture below.

Young guests can also expand their imaginations and earn their very own LEGOLAND Driver’s License at Driving School, team up to save the day at Fire-Rescue Academy, patrol the Wharf at Coast Guard Academy, and catch blockbusters in 4D at Palace Cinema.

Visitors will also be able to go on a pirate ship that spins and sways on the Anchors Away ride, or hop on a carousel made out of Lego items on the Brick Party ride, or go on the Duplo Express for a train ride filled with fun learning.

    SAFETY MEASURES

LEGOLAND’s first priority is the health, safety, and security of guests and its team. The theme park will follow specific safety and operating procedures under the state’s guidelines for reopening outdoor amusement parks, in addition to all federal and local health and safety guidelines, she said.

Additionally, all retail, food services, and recreational activities must abide by all state-issued guidance.

Face coverings and social distancing will be required for all customers and staff during preview days, the theme park said. And customers will be required to have a health screening with temperature checks prior to entry. Contact information must be collected from each party to inform contact tracing if needed. Entry and exit, and waiting times, will be staggered to avoid congestion, according to the state’s guidance.

LEGOLAND New York will also be a cashless resort, which means all transactions will occur via credit or debit card, or other contactless payment options.

Top 5 things to do at LEGOLAND Florida when it rains

    0

Considering that LEGOLAND Florida is 95% exposed to the weather and Florida’s rainy season is May through October, there is a good chance that it will rain while visiting LEGOLAND Florida. Lucky for you, a majority of the rainstorms are short and should pass through rather quickly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during the summer in Central Florida, so plan ahead! Visit outdoor attractions earlier in the day and save the rest for after lunch. Please be aware that LEGOLAND Florida’s safety protocols are required to close certain attractions when lightning is nearby, even if it’s not raining inside the park.

Here is my list of the top 5 things to do at LEGOLAND Florida when it rains:

    1) Visit the World famous Miniland USA

New for 2022 LEGOLAND Florida completely covered the entire Miniland USA area giving guests protection from the sun along with keeping guests dry from the rain. Anyone can spend hours looking at all the amazing details that the Master LEGO Builders built.

    LEGOLAND Miniland USA shaded area

    2) Head over to the indoor Imagination Zone

Head over to the Imagination Zone where it’s a covered area, and you get to build a LEGO car or glider and race it against the competition on a digitally timed track. Here you can spend hours building LEGOs and compete them against other LEGO builders and their creations. There is also the I-Zone Panini walk-up counter service where you can order food, sit and relax at your own individual table. After eating, you can sign up for a LEGO MINDSTORMS building class, where you build and program cutting-edge computerized LEGO MINDSTORMS robots. Then under the same roof head over to the WB Games Zone an interactive area that lets kids play all the latest and greatest LEGO video games using the latest personal technology devices and video kiosks.

    3) Do some LEGO shopping in The BIG Shop

The third-place I recommend when it rains is The BIG Shop located in The Beginning Area located at the front of the park. This shop is the largest LEGO store on the property and should have something interesting for everyone including the non-shopper. This store is conveniently located across from The Market Restaurant so you can make a quick dash and grab a doughnut and a cup of coffee to wait for the storm to pass.

The climate of the north and central parts of the US state of Florida is humid subtropical. South Florida has a tropical climate. There is a defined rainy season from May through October, when air mass thundershowers that build in the heat of the day drop heavy but brief summer rainfall.

    4) Visit the Official LEGOLAND Florida Hotel

Fourth on the list is the LEGOLAND Florida Resort which is located at the front of the park. Here you can get a bite to eat at the Skyline Lounge or at the Bricks Family Restaurant. Between the two restaurants is The Castle play area which features an interactive pirate ship and castle that is surrounded by a LEGO-filled moat!

Florida reports more thunderstorms than any other US state. Some places report in excess of 90 thunderstorm days per year, making Florida one of the most thundery regions outside of the tropics. Florida receives the highest density of lightning strikes within the United States.

    5) Younger kids are to head to the DUPLO Farm located in the DUPLO Village Area.

The number five pick of what to do when it rains at LEGOLAND Florida and if you have younger kids is to head to the DUPLO Farm located in the DUPLO Village Area. Here kids can play on indoor slides, barns, and kid-friendly farm equipment. They also have the opportunity to build with real DUPLO blocks, all within an enclosed air-conditioning building. Note that the seating is very limited here so if you arrive and all the benches are taken you might have to take a seat on the green artificial turf until the rain passes.

    DUPLO Schoolhouse

Visit one of the indoor rides or attractions

BONUS – There are several indoor rides and attractions such as LEGO NINJAGO The Ride, Lost Kingdom Adventure, and the “4D” movies that play in the Fun Town Theater.

Here are seven tips to keep in mind when visiting a theme park while it’s raining:

    1) Just because it is raining does not mean the rides are closed.

While I was recently visiting Universal Studios Orlando, we had a rainstorm and I asked one of the employees about ride closures. They told me that the rides stay open if it is just raining. If there is lightning within five miles of the park, then they will close all the outdoor rides, but indoor rides will remain open.

    2) Bring a poncho or a lightweight rain jacket.

If there is any chance of rain in the forecast, it is wise to bring a poncho or rain jacket with you to the park. You can store it in a locker until you need it. A poncho or jacket will be easier to wear while still going on rides, as opposed to an umbrella. Bringing one that you already own will also save you from shelling out a lot of money for the ones they sell at the park.

    3) Wear shoes that work well when wet.

Even if you have a poncho, your feet are likely to get wet anyways as there will be large puddles and pools of water. Sneakers and socks will not feel very good on your feet soaking wet, and flip-flops might be hard to walk in when they are slippery. A sturdy sandal with straps, or even water shoes, is a good choice for staying comfortable and safe.

    4) Wear quick-drying clothes.

With all the lightweight, quick-drying clothing options available, it is easy to find some attractive and comfortable options that will dry quickly if they get wet. These are great options for the Florida heat in general, as they wick away sweat and help keep you cool when it is not raining. I saw many people walking around with bathing suit tops once it started raining as well. You could even wear your bathing suit under your regular clothes and then change if it starts to rain.

    5) Pack a Ziploc bag to store your phone or camera in.

This is a good tip for any day at a theme park if it includes water rides where you might get wet. Dealing with a broken phone or camera while on vacation is no fun, so be prepared with a watertight bag you can stash those items away in beforehand. You can also rent lockers to store your items in, but most people prefer to have their phone or camera on them at all times, so they can snap photos or keep in contact with other members of your group without having to run back to the locker all the time.

    6) During a rainstorm is the perfect time to ride the water rides!

While I was in Islands of Adventure after it started raining, we decided to ride Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, which is a log flume-style ride. The ride is really fun and has several parts where you are going to get wet—especially with the steep drop at the end! We loved this ride and since we were already a little wet from the rain, we didn’t care that we were totally soaked when we got off of this ride. The next ride we chose was Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges. This raft ride takes you through rapids and down some waterfalls, and there are lots of opportunities to get wet. It was fun to embrace the rain and enjoy these water rides without caring about getting wetter.

    7) Go shopping.

Every theme park has a multitude of gift shops to choose from, and a rainstorm is a perfect time to explore them. Typically, an afternoon shower does not last very long in Florida, so it can be a welcome break to relax and meander around the gift shops.

New Area coming to LEGOLAND Florida in Spring of 2019

    0

LEGOLAND® Florida Resort has unveiled its biggest news since the theme park first opened in 2011. THE LEGO® MOVIE™ WORLD will premiere spring 2019 at the theme park built for kids: The announcement represents LEGOLAND Florida Resort’s largest investment yet.

The announcement follows the success of the blockbuster film, THE LEGO® MOVIE™, the upcoming sequel and the popularity of the film’s characters within the children’s theme park. Working closely with Warner Bros. Entertainment and LEGO System A/S, THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD will place guests right in the middle of Bricksburg, the city where Emmet lives in THE LEGO MOVIE.

THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD represents the theme park’s continuing commitment to providing state-of-the-art experiences specifically designed to create awesome memories for kids ages 2-12. “The sights and sounds will be fully immersive bringing THE LEGO MOVIE franchise to life in a way that only a LEGOLAND Park could,” said Rex Jackson, general manager of LEGOLAND Florida Resort. “We know kids come from all over the world to meet the stars of THE LEGO MOVIE and we can’t wait to see their faces light up as they interact within the imaginative world of Bricksburg.”

THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will feature three new rides, character meet and greets and a giant themed playscape. The interactive boat ride, The Quest for Chi, will be completely transformed and will offer guests an exciting new experience when it reopens as a key attraction in THE LEGO MOVIE WORLD in spring 2019. Guests are invited to experience the current attraction a final time before it closes on May 29.

The Great LEGO Race Opens March 23, 2018

    0

Put the pedal to the plastic when The Great LEGO Race opens Friday, March 23 at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort! The exciting new attraction combines roller coaster thrills with virtual reality (VR) technology for a rollicking race against LEGO minifigures.

It’s the first VR roller coaster experience designed for kids and represents the first time the LEGO brand and minifigures have been integrated with VR technology in a theme park attraction.

The Great LEGO Race at LEGOLAND Florida

With animated action taking place on the ground and in the air, the wild and wacky race pits guests against a pirate, wizard, surfer and pharaoh as they steer LEGO-built vehicles like a rocket-powered windsurfing rig, a stylish scooter fueled by espresso and an ornately canopied bed (called a “litter”) carried by mummy servants.

Wearing optional VR headsets, riders will experience the action from every direction while riding the roller coaster — up, down, forward, backward and all points in between — in a dazzling environment where everything is made of LEGO bricks.

“The Great LEGO Race was inspired by the way kids play with LEGO toys at home,” said Candy Holland, senior creative director for Merlin Magic Making, which designs and develops attractions for Merlin Entertainments sites around the world. “It’s a unique LEGO adventure that lets kids enter an epic imaginary world made entirely from LEGO bricks, featuring a host of different themes and fun LEGO characters, all mixed up together.”

Fans can experience a preview of the VR adventure with MackMedia’s Coastiality mobile app available for iOS, Android and Oculus devices from the App Store, Google Play and the Oculus Store. It’s free to download and can be enjoyed with or without a VR headset.

    Who can ride?

    • Under 42 inches (1.06m): Not tall enough to ride yet! Check out other exciting attractions like AQUAZONE Wave Racers, Technicycle, Kid Power Towers, The Dragon and LEGO NINJAGO The Ride.
    • 42-47 inches (1.06m-1.19m): Can ride without the VR headset when accompanied by a responsible rider 14 years or older and at least 48 inches tall (1.21m), who must ride without the VR headset to supervise his or her companion.
    • 48 inches (1.21m) and above: Can ride with or without the VR headset if he or she is alone. If he or she is supervising a companion rider 42-47 inches (1.06m-1.19m), both riders cannot wear the VR headset.
    • The VR headset is recommended for children ages 6 and up with a minimum height of 48 inches (1.21m).
    • Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer to the ride vehicle with assistance from a member of their party. While LEGOLAND Model Citizens are happy to assist, they are not permitted to lift guests into or out of a ride vehicle.

Can guests ride the roller coaster without wearing the VR headset?

    • Yes. A guest 48 inches (1.21m) or taller can ride with or without the VR headset if he or she is alone. If he or she is supervising a companion rider 42-47 inches (1.06m-1.19m), both riders cannot wear the VR headset.

Will the VR headsets be cleaned between each guest?

    • Model Citizens will wipe each headset clean with a sanitizing pad after each use. Headsets will be inspected regularly and replaced as necessary.

    0

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Kids can “become the ninja” in their very own LEGO® NINJAGO® [NIN-JAH-GO] adventure when they enter a magical, martial arts kingdom now open at LEGOLAND® Florida Resort.

LEGO NINJAGO World adds an immersive land filled with several hands-on, outdoor activities where kids can sharpen their ninja skills before the ultimate showdown on LEGO NINJAGO The Ride, a dazzling new attraction that blends 3D computer animation, “4D” special effects such as heat, fog and strobe lighting, and groundbreaking interactive technology never seen outside a LEGOLAND theme park.

Inspired by the popular LEGO building sets and the “LEGO NINJAGO: Masters of Spinjitzu” TV show, LEGO NINJAGO World puts guests at the center of the action in lots of fun ways:

    • LEGO NINJAGO The Ride – A state-of-the-art “dark ride” where guests score points using ninja hand moves to blast animated fireballs, lightning and more at waves of 3D villains. Children under 48 inches tall must ride with a responsible person 48 inches or taller who can ensure their safety.
    • Zane’s Temple Build – A LEGO building experience where kids can contribute to a giant model of the mountaintop NINJAGO monastery with bins of loose LEGO bricks.

    • Jay’s Lightning Drill – Practice precision and reflexes by pressing as many light-up targets as possible in 30-second sessions; recommended for ages 2-12.

The lushly landscaped area also features large LEGO models of LEGO NINJAGO heroes, Kai, Jay, Cole, Zane, Lloyd, Nya [NEE-AH] and Master Wu, daily meet-and-greet opportunities with sibling ninja Kai and Nya, and Wu’s Warehouse, a themed retail shop filled with LEGO NINJAGO building sets, children’s apparel, costumes, books, souvenirs and more.

The adventure continues Sept. 22, when Warner Bros. Pictures releases “The LEGO NINJAGO Movie,” a full-length motion picture from the same producers behind 2014’s smash hit “The LEGO Movie™” and featuring the voices of Jackie Chan, Michael Peña, Dave Franco, Abbi Jacobson and Olivia Munn.

Announced in March 2016, LEGO NINJAGO World continues the largest period of growth and expansion in the five-year history of LEGOLAND Florida Resort.

Since opening Oct. 15, 2011, the multi-day vacation destination has added LEGOLAND Water Park (May 2012), LEGO® Star Wars™ Miniland Model Display (November 2012), LEGO World of Chima™ (July 2013), DUPLO® Valley (May 2014), LEGOLAND Hotel (May 2015), Heartlake City (June 2015), “The LEGO Movie 4D A New Adventure” (January 2016), Creative Cove/Build-A-Boat (March 2016) and a life-size LEGO replica of the very first Ford Mustang model (October 2016).

Construction continues on LEGOLAND Beach Retreat, which will more than double the resort’s on-site accommodations when its whimsically themed bungalows open April 7, 2017. Reservations are available for stays through Nov. 30, 2017. To book, visit www.LEGOLAND.com/beachretreat or call (877) 350-5346 daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. LEGO Ninjago World Opening January 12th 2017

    0

    Lego Ninjago World

Lego Ninjago World, an enclosed ride that allows guests to battle digital villains with mere hand gestures, will open Jan. 12 at LEGOLAND Florida Resort, park officials announced Friday.

Set on 3 acres at the north end of the park between Lego City and Coastersaurus, the world will include Ninjago The Ride, manufactured by Triotech, a Canada-based company that makes media-based, interactive attractions.

Lego Ninjago World will add an immersive area filled with several hands-on, outdoor activities where kids can sharpen their ninja skills before the ultimate showdown on Lego Ninjago The Ride, a new attraction that blends 3D computer animation, “4D” effects and groundbreaking technology never seen outside of a LEGOLAND theme park.

“Lego Ninjago World is an incredible addition to our park,” resort general manager Adrian Jones said Friday, a day before LEGOLAND Florida’s fifth anniversary. “One that offers amazing experiences that wouldn’t actually have been possible because of the technology five years ago.”

Jones stood near the entrance to Lego Ninjago World, a ride based on a popular line of Lego toys and an animated TV show, “Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.” The ride will occupy a previously unused area between the Boating School and Coastersaurus.

The dark ride will feature Maestro hand-gesture technology, which enables guests to control the game with their hands — and without the need for a hand-held device. The use of hand gestures reflects LEGOLAND’s philosophy of not including guns or other physical weapons in its rides, Jones said.

Visitors will ride on cars through a darkened building as video effects play on the walls and contoured screens, which Jones said offer more depth than flat screens. He described the ride as “4D” because it combines three-dimensional displays with wind and fog effects. Riders will be scored and collect points during the four-minute ride.

The ride will accept young visitors, though anyone under 48 inches tall must be accompanied by an adult.

Lego Ninjago World will be a competitive ride, much like a video game, as family members vie to see who can accumulate the most points. Riders collect points by dispatching villains lurking throughout the ride, ultimately facing The Great Devourer, an enormous snake projected onto a blank wall on the final stretch of the ride.

LEGOLAND representatives stressed the competitive aspect of Lego Ninjago World. The “Wall of Heroes,” a digital display near the ride’s exit, will show images of each car’s riders with their scores. A daily leaderboard will also be displayed, giving guests motivation to ride again and improve their scores.

    Little Ninja Training Area

The courtyard will also include a character meet-and-greet with Ninjago character Nya, which will be the first introduction of the costumed character to a LEGOLAND park.

Other areas in the courtyard give guests a chance to practice their “ninja” skills. The camp will include a climbing wall, a reaction game, a spinning platform and a “lightning drill” to test reflexes.

Ninjago World is just one expansion of the park planned to open in 2017.

    Future Expansions

Along with Lego Ninjago World, construction continues on LEGOLAND Beach Retreat, which will more than double the resort’s on-site accommodations when its themed bungalows open in mid-2017. Guests currently can make reservations for stays from June 1-Sept. 4, 2017, with rates starting at $182 per night. A grand opening date and associated festivities will be announced at a later date, along with additional amenities.

Since opening, the LEGOLAND Florida park has resulted in nearly $1 billion in economic activity for the area, said Jones, citing research by James Farrell, an associate professor of finance and economics at Florida Southern College.

Additionally, the park created 1,600 new jobs for the region and $63 million in state and local tax revenue between 2010 and 2015, according to Farrell’s research.

Splash Along to LEGOLAND Florida Water Park

Summer is almost upon us. Is already upon us? Who can keep track. It’s hot. To keep the heat at bay, the Central Florida area has no shortage of theme park options to splish and splash away the summer doldrums. Before you finalize which water park is best for you and your family, I’d like to make the case for LEGOLAND Florida Water Park in fabulous Winter Park…I mean Garden…I mean Haven? Winter Haven.

    LEGOLAND Florida Water Park Map
    LEGOLAND Florida Water Park Map

The LEGOLAND Florida Resort bills itself as a two-day experience and their water park certainly makes a good case for that. It’s a decent-size park. It’s maybe not a full 8-hour experience but you can definitely enjoy the majority of a day there. If you are a first time visitor to the LEGOLAND Florida Resort, I would definitely advise against trying to squeeze both parks into the same day.

Shall we dive, pun intended–but seriously–don’t dive, into some useful, and I hope, hugely entertaining information about LEGOLAND Florida Water Park?

All right. You’ve made the 40-minute (let’s be honest, 1 hour) drive from Tampa or Orlando. You’re all parked in the general lot. You’ve double checked your supplies: towels, sunscreen, small cooler (very small), change of clothes, snacks, dirigibles, air hockey table; wait, that’s an old moving list.

    Cooler_mouse
Approximate size of cooler allowed into water park. *Note: Author may be slightly exaggerating.

The point is, you are now ready to get soaked and relax under an umbrella. Well, you may want to make sure you have some sneakers to go with your flip-flops because you are now about to embark on a march that would make a penguin go, “Man, that’s a long march.”

There is no dedicated parking area for the water park so you must enter through the front gate of the main LEGOLAND park and make your way to the back right of the park—the WAY back right. There are multiple routes but I’d suggesting sticking to your left and either cutting diagonally through Miniland/Star Wars or going past Miniland on the left and then cutting through the Lego Technic area. Don’t make the mistake of going right and trudging through Duplo, Lego Kingdoms, Land of Adventure, Mount. Doom, the Florida Everglades, and then, finally, Lego City.

    Mount_Doom_(Tolkien)
Mount Doom. Wave hello to Frodo and Sam as you pass by. Their trip was only slightly longer than yours.

Like any theme park visit, being at gate opening is a wise decision. The water park generally opens a half-hour after the main park. There is actually a pretty decent amount of shaded seating but why leave it to chance? Arrive early, plant your flag Tom Cruise-style from the movie Far Away, and get in some early, crowd free enjoyment.

In my mind, the water park is broken into three areas that get gradually more grown-up oriented as you make your way deeper into the park. When you first enter and get past the lockers and burger restaurant, you’ll come to the most family friendly area of the water park.

On the right is a shallow Duplo pool area with two very tame slides. Any child under 10 should have fun in this area but it’s especially nice for the toddlers.

There is, at least to me, an odd little sandy area of beach chairs and cabanas carved out next to the Duplo splash pool. I don’t think I’ve ever once stepped into this sand. I’ll save the amazingly abrasive and fun experience of hot sand between my toes for when it’s absolutely necessary, like going to an actual beach.

Across from the Duplo area is the entrance to Build-a-Raft lazy river. The rafts come in singles and doubles and are appointed with areas to attach large, heavy rubber Legos. The large Legos don’t fit as well as their smaller, traditional brethren but they mostly get the job done.

Done floating around like a Hobbit in a wine barrel (double bonus points to author for second LOTR reference), it’s time to take a trip over the Bridge of Sore Feet Sighs, aka, the arched bridge over the lazy river, to get to the rest of the water park.

    shutterstock_104612096
*Bridge image not to scale* Barely.

After surviving the bridge, you’ll see the majority of the seating options before you. If you are going to focus on the wave pool for the day, this will be a good area to set up. If you plan on spending most of the time chasing your little ones around the Joker Soaker, I’d recommend the seating to the left. Seating actually wraps around the Joker Soaker area so don’t give up on finding a shaded area.

The wave pool is gentle as these things go. The waves come every 20 minutes or so and unless you go all the way into the deep end, they are very manageable, even novice swimmers. Plenty of life jackets are available for children and if you are at all anxious about your child, I’d wrap them up in one. Plenty of lifeguards are surveying the wave pool at all times as well.

The newly opened Coast Guard themed, Build-a-Boat is a fun little area in front of the wave pool. Children, or ultra-competitive parents, can grab a boat shell, build it up with Duplo bricks, and launch it down the meandering race course to see whose boat reigns supreme. The Build-a-Boat area is under a nice canopy of shade as well. The canopy is painted like an upside down Coast Guard boat, which is amusing if not also a little alarming. I guess they hit some rough seas.

LEGOLAND Florida Water Park Build A Boat
Not seen in picture, mom totally blocking boats downstream so her boat will win.

Before venturing further in my tour, let’s stop for some food. And by stop, I mean trudging back over the bridge towards the entrance where their main quick service restaurant is stationed. Here you’ll find a pretty traditional fare of burgers and chicken strips. I’d recommend eating before noon as the line can get quite long. There are other stations for snacks here and there but their hours and menus vary.

Done with lunch? Shall we go back over the bridge? Yes? Yay! The Joker Soaker splash pool is what I consider the heart of the park. From the center of the pool arises a structure with multiple slides, waterspouts, water cannons, and the named-for Joker waiting for you atop the stairs.

The slide exits can be a bit confusing so make sure to keep a close eye on your children as they may go in one way and come out in a different area. Also, enter the structure at your own peril. Don’t think you can escort your kids through the different levels without getting completely soaked yourself. Even if you study the devilish water sprays for hours, you can never account for the 6-year-old waiting to spray you from above as you wait in line for a slide.

    shutterstock_161601731
Thanks. Little Bobby. No, really. Thanks.

Past the Joker Soaker area are the more traditional slides you might be used to seeing at a bigger water park like Typhoon Lagoon or Wet-n-Wild. The first staircase leads up to a pair of raft slides that twist down into a small pool. One of the slides is open air and the other is enclosed. These are very family-friendly; if you don’t count the heart attack dad will have climbing the stairs. I think these are a great introduction to “bigger” slides for an anxious child. Make sure to check height requirements.

Finally, at the end of the water park is their tallest structure that houses the three steepest slides at the park. None of the slides are going to give you the ultimate wedgy but they will definitely be intimidating for the less adventurous.

Your brave author waving good-bye to his loved ones who would mourn him deeply for several minutes.

Overall, LEGOLAND Florida Water Park is a great mid-tier park. It doesn’t really measure up to the all-day experiences that Walt Disney Disney and SeaWorld offer but, then again, it is going for the younger crowd. Keep your expectations in check, put on your walking shoes, and your family should have a pretty amazing day of watery fun in the summer sun.

LEGOLAND Florida adding solar panel canopy to parking area

    0

LEGOLAND Florida celebrated Earth Day on Friday with a new solar energy project.

LEGOLAND Florida covered parkingThe park in Winter Haven announced it was partnering with Tampa Electric to add a canopy of solar energy panels over the park’s preferred parking lot, next to the theme park entrance. Starting this spring, the panels would shade more than 600 vehicles while also producing enough electricity to power up to 250 homes each year.

Tampa Electric will own and maintain the solar array. The power generated from these panels is enough power for 725,000 customers and still enough for LEGOLAND Florida.

LEGOLAND Florida says the new solar energy project is part of several ongoing environmental initiatives at the park. A solar panel array is already installed at the park’s Imagination Zone venue.

The vehicles in the Ford Junior Driving School attraction are also charged with solar power.

Here are some more fun facts on how LEGOLAND Florida stays “green” throughout the year:

    • Nearly 1 ton of LEGO brick has been collected for recycling. It’s then redistributed to manufacture new products.
    • All 12 electric vehicles at the Ford Junior Driving School attraction are charged entirely with solar power.
    • A 30-kilowatt solar panel array is mounted atop Imagination Zone, supporting Tampa Electric’s Renewable Energy program.
    • Under the Citrus Connection Universal Access program, all Model Citizens who work here enjoy access to free bus rides, resulting in 22,581 fewer vehicle trips on area roads in 2015.
    • LEGOLAND Hotel works with Clean the World to supply recycled hygiene products to those in need.

LEGOLAND Florida creating a new 166 unit oasis resort

    0

WINTER HAVEN — Legoland Florida Resort is poised to leap across Cypress Gardens Boulevard.

Less than a year after opening an onsite LEGOLAND Hotel, Legoland has filed plans for a lakeside resort with 166 single-story duplex units, a pool, two ponds, and a 12,000 square-foot clubhouse.

Merlin Entertainments Group, the corporate owner of Legoland, calls it “Project Oasis” in plans submitted to the Southwest Florida Water Management District for a Statewide Environmental Resource Permit.

Merlin filed 15 pages of final construction documents to the district’s Brooksville office on Dec. 7. District staff is still reviewing details of the project, a spokeswoman said.

The project would be built on 57.7 acres of vacant land adjacent to Lake Dexter behind the Winter Haven Square shopping center, which is across Cypress Gardens Boulevard from the Legoland parking lot.

    LEGOLAND Florida Project Oasis Location

    First Expansion Outside LEGOLAND

The resort would be Legoland’s first expansion beyond the boundaries of Cypress Gardens, the venerable theme park purchased by Merlin in 2010. The current resort occupies 150 acres entirely on the west side of Cypress Gardens Boulevard.

A spokesman for Legoland Florida declined specific comments on the project.

“We are not prepared to make an official announcement today,” public relations manager David Brady said, “but in the very near future we will be making multiple announcements about the future of Legoland Florida Resort. So stay tuned.”

Merlin Entertainments purchased the property Monday from John G. Wood and Associates, paying $4.6 million, according to a deed filed with the Polk County Clerk of Courts. The company is owned by state Rep. John Wood, R-Winter Haven.

    Location of LEGOLANDs Beach Retreat

Wood’s family has owned the property since 1969, according to Polk County Property Appraiser records.

Reached by phone in Tallahassee, where the Florida Legislature is in session, Wood declined to talk in detail about the transaction.

“I can confirm that is a valid deed,” Wood said.

The property, currently a grassy expanse on the western shore of Lake Dexter, is bordered by Register Road, which extends east from Legoland’s main entrance and splits into a north-south road running behind Winter Haven Square. The shopping center includes a Publix Super Market at 6031 Cypress Gardens Blvd.

Engineering sketches filed with SWFWMD depict a resort with circular and semi-circular clusters of up to eight structures. The 83 duplexes would offer 166 units for guests.

The permit application covers only engineering plans and doesn’t offer any details on the capacity of the duplex units, prices for lodging, or the length of stays that would be available.

It’s not clear how soon construction might begin or when the resort could open for guests.

Mark Jackson, director of Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing, said the project shows the long-term confidence Merlin and Legoland leaders have in the area.

“They’ve done everything they said they were going to do and then some, and I think their growth and success may even have surprised them to some degree,” Jackson said. “But it also is a demonstration of the commitment that Legoland and Merlin Entertainments have made to Polk County. They have been a big part of our tourism infrastructure since they came on, and this is the next logical step.”

The plans filed with the district list the engineering contractors as Littlejohn Engineering Associates of Orlando and TLC Engineering for Architecture of Cocoa. The architect is Wallis Murphey Boyington of Lakeland.

Benjamin Ellis, senior project manager for Littlejohn, wrote to SWFWMD in a letter dated Jan. 25 to respond to 16 comments about the project’s site development plans. The first comment noted a discrepancy between the permit applicant, Merlin Entertainments Group Florida, and the owner of the property, John G. Wood and Associates.

That issue was settled with the sale of the property this week.

    No impact to local environment

In his response to the comments, Ellis said the project will have no impact on wetlands.

In its comments, SWFWMD said it is coordinating with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Bureau of Imperiled Species on possible secondary impacts to threatened or endangered species.

A small canal separates the property from houses on lakeside lots to the north on Register Road SE.

Orlando Fonte lives in the second house north of the property where Legoland proposes to build Project Oasis. Fonte said local residents have been hearing rumors about a Legoland development at the site for a long time.

Fonte said he knows Wood and asked him about plans for the property as recently as two months ago. He said Wood gave an evasive response.

Fonte said his main concern would be an increase in boat traffic on Lake Dexter, which borders his backyard. He said he has a dock on the lake and owns a boat.

“It’s a pretty quiet fishing lake,” said Fonte, who has resided on Register Road for 13 years. “We do ski and do recreational sports. If you had something going on having to do with Legoland, that would cause a problem.”

The design sketches in the application to SWFWMD do not indicate plans to build docks and don’t mention plans for use of the lake.

Aside from that one concern, Fonte said he welcomes the expansion.

“I hear (activities at) Legoland all day while we’re outside, but that doesn’t bother me at all,” Fonte said.

    LEGOLAND Florida past expansions

Legoland Florida opened in October 2011 as the second such attraction in the United States. The attraction, aimed at families with children ages 2 through 12, has expanded with several new rides and themed areas since then.

Last May, the theme park opened Legoland Hotel, a five-story, 152-room lodging with rooms catering to children in four designs reflecting sections of the park or Lego products.

Brady, the Legoland spokesman, said the hotel has been a success.

“We’ve been extremely pleased with the reactions we’ve got from guests, both in terms of demand for accommodations and just the feedback we’ve gotten on how people have responded to the theming and amenities,” Brady said. “It’s been very, very well received.”

Jackson said the resort will further spur tourists to make multiple-day stays in Polk County.

“From a tourism and sports perspective, it just provides us with additional inventory and that inventory is going to foster even more growth in the outlying areas, so we certainly have been blessed,” Jackson said.

The LEGO Movie 4D A New Adventure opens Jan. 29

    0

The LEGO Movie 4D A New Adventure opens Jan. 29 at LEGOLAND Florida Resort in the Wells Fargo Fun Town Theater.

The little, yet equally handsome and equally evil brother of President Business has one mission: to unleash an Evil Secret Plot involving the heroes from “The LEGO Movie.” And to become the most famous evil villain and movie star in the whole world. Okay, maybe he has two missions.

The brand-new attraction introduces Risky, a bold visionary who crosses paths with Emmet, Wyldstyle, Unikitty, Benny and MetalBeard in an entirely new story set after the events of the blockbuster movie.

In “The LEGO Movie 4D A New Adventure,” Risky Business unveils an ambitious project inspired by the movie heroes’ original adventures, where all is not as it seems. Featuring the same sharp wit and LEGO scenery that made the “The LEGO Movie” a worldwide smash it, the attraction combines 3D film with “4D” atmospheric effects like water, wind and fog to create an experience that will tickle the senses of every guest.

Bringing Risky Business to life is actor, writer, comedian and film fan Patton Oswalt, who joins actors Elizabeth Banks (Wyldstyle), Alison Brie (Unikitty), Charlie Day (Benny) and Nick Offerman (MetalBeard) from the blockbuster movie.

The 12 1/2-minute film will appear exclusively at LEGOLAND Parks and LEGOLAND Discovery Centers, and will screen several times a day in the Wells Fargo Fun Town Theater at LEGOLAND Florida Resort.

LEGOLAND Florida’s new Heartlake City area now open to the public

    0

Legoland Florida just opened Heartlake City, a new “land” based on the Lego Friends toy line with a new thrill ride called Mia’s Riding Adventure, an interactive show Friends to the Rescue, and new shops in Heartlake Mall.

The fictional Heartlake City, named for its heart-shaped lake, is the home of Andrea, Emma, Mia, Stephanie and Olivia and her parents. Their friendship is the focus of the toy line. At Legoland, Heartlake City will be located next to Magnolia Mansion in Fun Town.

Heartlake City features several signature elements, including:

    Mia’s Riding Adventure
is a brand new ride themed around Mia’s love of horses. This adventurous ride seats up to 40 passengers on a circular platform with outward-facing horse shaped seats. The disk spins in circles while traveling forward and backward on a wide U-shaped track.

Friends to the Rescue is a new interactive musical show starring the LEGO Friends as they work together at Heartlake Hall to ensure the concert goes off without a hitch.

Stephanie’s Newsroom is a photo opportunity that gives guests the chance to show off their camera-ready skills, as they take over for Stephanie at the Heartlake News Desk.

Heartlake Stepping Tones Fountain is a heart-shaped fountain filled with LEGO brick instruments that play real music triggered by interactive icons.

Heartlake Mall features several retail areas offering a variety of LEGO products including the LEGO Friends toy line.

“Heartlake City offers an interactive LEGO Friends experience for guests of all ages. Mia’s Riding Adventure is a daring new attraction, that we feel is the perfect addition to expand our park offering,” said Adrian Jones, General Manager, LEGOLAND Florida Resort. “Heartlake City, when combined with a stay in a LEGO Friends themed room or suite, will allow guests to further immerse themselves in the world of LEGO Friends.” LEGOLAND Florida Resort offers the only LEGO Friends themed guest rooms in the U.S., and the only LEGO Friends themed suite in the world.

LEGOLAND Florida Resort will also host “Friends Weekend” from June 26-28. This is a park-wide event where guests can walk down the purple carpet, participate in a themed build, and show off their moves at a dance party.

LEGOLAND Florida Hotel is officially open to the public

    0

The LEGOLAND Florida Hotel opened today just a few steps from the Legoland Florida Theme Park.
“From the minute you walk into Legoland Hotel, you can see it’s totally designed and built for kids,” said Legoland spokesperson Julie Estrada.

A massive Lego dragon with steaming nostrils and an 8-foot wing span greets lodgers.

    LEGOLAND FLORIDA HOTEL

Lego models—more than 2000 are throughout the hotel—and brick-filled play pits are part of the lobby’s allure. “Kids can go right at it building with Lego bricks,” said Estrada. And we saw parents getting in on the fun too. Kids even get the chance to “check-in” at the registration desk. And make sure you check out the back wall at the front desk. There are more than 5,000 mini Lego figures hanging out to say hello.

The fun continues in the rooms, where each has a special Lego theme—Pirate, Adventure, Castle and Friends. Each room has a scavenger hunt that will unlock a safe with a little treasure for kids. (I still can’t get the last puzzle clue.) What does it cost to live this Lego fantasy? Rooms for a family of four can run about $550. But spokesperson Julie Estrada says the hotel offers amenities you cannot get anywhere else. “We’ve taken our model shop and brought it inside the hotel, so we have a master model builder workshop only for our hotel guests,” said Estrada. And that’s where you can meet Jason Miller—a Lego Master Model Designer. “It’s kind of a magic, a special bond if you will- with those kids who love Lego!” The hotel also has a pool and splash area for children, a restaurant and a lounge area for grown-ups.

Reservations are available at LEGOLAND Hotel Florida or 877-LEGOLAND (534-6526)

Do you plan on staying the night in the new hotel?  Let me hear your comments below!

LEGOLAND Florida now working on the Heartlake City expansion

    0

Two months after announcing an expansion to the park, Legoland Florida officials got work started on Heartlake City on Monday.

The addition is Lego’s attempt to specifically target young girls ages 6 to 10.

Part of the Lego Friends toy line, Heartlake City is a combination of Lego horses, shades of pink and the world of characters Mia, Emma, Olivia, Andrea and Stephanie.

Five local Girl Scouts, representing the five fictional friends, assisted in the ground breaking.

“We invited the Girl Scouts to help us with this event because we believe they can relate to the Lego Friends love of adventures, solving problems and having fun,” Rex Jackson, director of marketing for Legoland Florida Resort, said in a news release.

    Heartlake City - LEGOLAND Florida

The park’s addition features an indoor performance venue and show, shopping options and a disc-coaster called “Mia’s Riding Adventure.” Riders will sit atop horses as they spin and propel up and down on a U-shaped coaster.

Heartlake City, a new land based on the popular Lego Friends line of toys, is set to open this summer. It will include a new ride themed to Mia’s love of horses: Mia’s Riding Adventure, plus a new interactive show called “Friends to the Rescue” as well as Stephanie’s News Room and shops inside Heartlake Mall.

It is scheduled to open sometime in June.

A similar addition is scheduled to open in Legoland California in May. The California park, however, will include different rides and an outdoor venue.

“Our goal is to support girls as they build confidence and develop leadership skills,” said Jimmy Barringer, director of marketing for Girl Scouts of West Central Florida. “Teaming up with Legoland Florida Resort was a great opportunity for these young ladies to proudly represent our organization.”
